The two- day workshop on
Disaster Preparedness was conducted in our college on 18th and 19th
of this month. The workshop was funded
by the Greater Mumbai Municipality
Disaster Risk Management Cell.
It was attended by 54 participants including 38 students from our College,
three faculty members, five non-teaching staff and eight students from other
institutions.
The Workshop was
inaugurated at 10.00 a.m. sharp in the presence of the Chief guest,
Mr.V.V.Vaidya,
the chief, Disaster Risk Management Cell, B.M.C., Mr.Ramesh Deokar,
Program Officer, N.S.S.
University of Mumbai and
Principal Dr.J.K.Verma.
The first lecture was delivered
by Dr.Tushar Guha, Managing Director of “Nrityanjali”. Dr.Guha explained the Basic concepts of Disaster, their
types, and the requirement of Disaster Management . Shri.Madhukar Sanap, the district project officer, made a
power point presentation on “Disaster Management in Mumbai”. After this the students dispersed for a Lunch
break.
Post lunch a lecture by Mr.Sanjay Nerurkar
from Mumbai Five Brigade was extremely interesting and lucid. Mr.Nerurkar explained the principles of combustion and
method of extinction. Different types of five extinguishers were displayed and
after a tea break demonstrations of use of five extinguishers were made. All participants were given a chance of
handling extinguishers.
2nd Day
The day began with a
lecture on first Aid. Mrs.Snehal Desai
from K.E.M. Hospital explained the principles and
contents of First Aid, Types of injuries, signs, symptoms and treatment.
The Stages of search and rescue,
self rescue were explained by Shri Rajendra Lokhande and
Shri Brahmadande,
from the BMC DRM team. The entire
session after Lunch was devoted to practical exercises, various types of knots,
stretcher drill and stretcher improvisation.
Each and every participant was keenly involved in the practicals.
At the end of the day, Prof.D.G.Phondekar gave a presentation on “Evacuation
Plan” and a mock drill was conducted.
In presence of the
Principal Dr.J.K.Verma
participants shared their experiences and certificates were distributed. Prof. Phondekar
announced a project ‘each one teach one’ for the
participants session concluded with a vote of thanks to the BMC Disaster Management
team.
The idea of conducting a
workshop on Disaster Preparedness had germinated in the mind of Prof.D.G.Phondekar some three months ago. In this respect, yet another workshop on the
subject has been planned by our NSS unit for teachers of the Campus institutes
to be conducted somewhere in September, 2008.
