The third edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) is scheduled to be held on the 15th of January 2006. The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, offering prize money of USD 210,000, with a meticulously chosen route that showcases Mumbai city in all its splendour and the lavish hospitality bestowed upon the invited participants, is among the top ten marathons in the world, attracting the strongest professional field of athletes. Being part of the Greatest Race On Earth (GROE) only enhances the status of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon as one of the premier sporting events of the world.
 The event is ratified by the Association of International Marathons & Road Races (AIMS) and the Athletic Federation of India (AFI). Mr. Hugh Jones, Secretary General of AIMS, is the Race Director to the event. The race categories for the SCMM are Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.097 km), Dream Run (7 km), Senior Citizens' Run (5 km) and the Wheelchair Event (3.5 km).
A very special aspect of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon is that it provides a platform for everyone to run on the same track for a charity they believe in. For the SCMM 2005, celebrities and participants from all walks of life had lent their might to raising money for charity and over Rs. 4 crore was raised, a figure which was 1.5 crore in the previous year. This is truly a tremendous commentary on the fiber of Indian society and a fitting tribute to the never-say-die spirit of Mumbai.
Now, the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2006 is geared to be bigger and better. In keeping with the growing demand of running places, the total number of entries has been increased for SCMM 2006. International participation is also expected to increase this year. Once again people from all over the country will come together as one, to raise money for charities which they support and participate in the movement called Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon!!! |
