| The Mumbai Festival, showcasing a pot pourri of Indian heritage, culture, arts, food, sports, films and music, would be held in the metropolis from January 7 to 16.
The festival aims at putting Mumbai on the international festival circuit, to act as a major catalyst for tourism in Mumbai and create an opportunity for all Mumbaikars to come together and celebrate the spirit of Mumbai, Prakash Wahankar, spokesperson for the festival, said.
Organised by `Tourism Cooperative', the festival is being supported by the Maharashtra Government, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, and a host of organisations related to art and culture, he said.
Mumbai Festival to be inaugurated in Gateway of India on January 7
The festival would be inaugurated at the Gateway of India and the Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, Union Minister of Tourism were among those who were expected to attend the event. A fashion show by designer N C Shaina and invocation by noted musician Shankar Mahadevan would be the main attraction at the opening ceremony.
The festival spread over various venues in the city, including Gateway of India, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Marine Drive and the Ravindra Natya Mandir in central Mumbai.
The highlights of the festival include a music and dance performance, crafts exhibition, marathon, kite flying contests, a shopping festival and a food festival.
A music performance would be held at the Gateway where `Ruhaniyat'--a Sufi music ensemble conceptualised by Ustad Sultan Khan would be organised on the occasion.
