| Narthaki Natraj from Madurai is a Bharata Natyam dancer with a difference. Braving various social obstacles, she has chosen to specialise in Nayaki Roopa and considers her path to be the age-old one of Mathura Bhakti, in which the devotee regards herself as a receptive female presence, a nayaki, in order to approach a divinity that is regarded as a masculinised other. She has performed at various sabhas and festivals in India and the USA. Recently awarded a Sangeet Natak Akademi fellowship. |
